Italian cloth is the cloth of the Renaissance city-states: the deep silk velvets of Venice and Genoa that signaled rank across Europe, and the diamond motley of the commedia dell'arte harlequin. It reaches back further still, to the herringbone the Romans laid in road and brick and carried into weaving.
