Place of origin
The Indian Subcontinent
For centuries the Indian subcontinent wove the finest cottons on earth, and the names still say so: calico from Calicut, madras from the port of Madras, muslin through Mosul from the looms of Bengal, seersucker from the Persian of the trade routes. European demand for these cloths reshaped global trade and provoked outright bans.
